EUobserver | TRAN/ENVI: LEADING CITIZENS INTO A MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LIFE

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to provide insights about the development within the Committee on Transport and Tourism/Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (TRAN/ENVI). To prepare for this report, I observed the work of the committee while interviewing some members.

COMMITTEE ISSUE

In an interview with a delegate of TRAN, it was explained that their topic is how to reduce the CO2 emissions by the transportation sector, focusing mostly on public transportation and urban planning infrastructure. Main pillar of their discussion was motivation. According to the delegate, they have some points concerning campaigns that encourage citizens to opt for alternative means of transportation, such as bicycles and walking. The delegate states: “Such a topic is really crucial, since with the evolution of technology, the environmental sector is neglected and we constantly tend to destroy it. At the end of the day, it is our home and we have to safeguard it through alternative ways that our committee has proposed.”

OBSERVATIONS

The 16th of April was the last chance for the committees to form a splendid resolution. During their meeting, the committee on TRAN/ENVI was enthusiastic to participate in drafting the resolution. They were active and concentrated on their goal, in fact, some of them appeared to be really competitive. According to the delegate interviewed, even though they had a wide range of ideas, they didn’t present them all due to time restrictions. Since various disagreements had arisen regarding reforming and striking OCs, their discussion contained interesting debates.
